Open with curiosity, not a performance

Reviewed 24 October 2026 by the CharmCue team · How CharmCue reviews

The first message carries absurd weight for how little it needs to accomplish. It does not need to be clever, funny, or memorable. It needs to do exactly two things: show you noticed something real, and make replying feel easy.

Start from one specific detail

Pick one concrete thing from their profile: the croissant quest, the dog, the trail photo, or the strong breakfast opinions. A specific detail gives you a natural starting point. A simple greeting can also work when that feels more like you; there is no guaranteed formula for a reply.

Ask the easy follow-up

Turn the detail into a question with a low answering cost. Not an interview question, not a test, just the natural next thing a curious person would ask. “Serious question: which city is currently winning the croissant ranking?” works because it is specific, playful, and answerable in one sentence. Easy to answer means easy to start.

Curious and specific

Serious question: which city is currently winning the croissant ranking?

Match their energy, keep your tone

If their profile is playful, you can be playful. If it is earnest, be earnest. But stay inside a tone that feels like you, because the conversation has to continue after the opener. An opening line that wins a reply and loses the conversation is a bad trade. CharmCue's Coach lets you preview the same idea in different tones for exactly this reason: pick the one you could keep up for twenty messages.

What to avoid

Keep the first message respectful and easy to respond to. Avoid teasing that puts someone down or pressuring them to answer. A short greeting or a question about a detail they chose to share are both reasonable ways to begin.

After they reply, stay curious

The opener only opens. The second message matters more: react to what they actually said, share something real in return, and ask one thing, not five. Conversation is rally, not serve. Your only goal in the first exchange is to make the second exchange feel natural.

The short version

One real detail, one easy question, your own tone. React, share, ask one thing. Curiosity compounds.
