How to decline clearly and kindly

If you want to end a conversation, you can choose a short, direct message. If the contact feels unwanted, unsafe, or persistent after you have said no, you do not owe another reply; use the dating app's block or report tools if helpful.
Why clarity is the kind option
For a conversation you have chosen to end, a clear message can prevent ambiguity. This is a choice, not an obligation: safety, boundaries, and your comfort come first.

The formula: appreciate, state, close
Three short parts. Appreciate something genuine about the exchange, state plainly that you are stepping back, and close the door warmly so no reply is required. For example: “I enjoyed chatting with you. I don't feel the connection I'm looking for, so I'm going to step back. Wishing you good luck out there.”
After a date or two, add one specific thing you liked: “Coffee yesterday was genuinely lovely.” Specificity proves the message is real and not pasted. Keep it to a few sentences regardless. Length does not equal kindness here; clarity does.
Do this
After a few chats
I enjoyed chatting with you. I don't feel the connection I'm looking for, so I'm going to step back. Wishing you good luck out there.
Do this
After a date
Coffee yesterday was genuinely lovely. I don't feel the spark I'm looking for, so I won't be continuing. Take care.
What not to do
Do not list reasons or flaws. A critique of the other person helps no one and often reads as cruel. Do not leave the door cracked (“maybe some other time”) unless you mean it; false hope is its own unkindness. And do not debate if they push back. One calm restatement is enough, then disengage: “I understand, and my decision stands. Take care.”
Timing matters
If you want to close the conversation, send the message when you feel ready. If you have not had a meaningful exchange, you can simply stop responding or unmatch; a closing note is optional.
If you choose to send a close, appreciate, state, close. If contact is unwanted or unsafe, no reply is fine.
